Old Country House Mogorjelo [Through My Lens Nr. 104]

Mogorjelo is the site of an old country house (Villa Rustica) that was built during Roman times in the southern regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the city of Čapljina. An Italic settler had a private manor complex built for agricultural purposes on the Mogorjelo site in the mid first century CE. In the early fourth century, a state-owned estate was constructed over the ruins, with a villa which now forms the major feature of the complex. The country house provided food to the town of Narone, whose ruins nowadays lie close to the city of Metković.

It was eventually state owned and is one of the more prominent landmarks of Herzegovina. Entrance to the grounds are free of charge, and there is a parking for cars next to it also free of charge. I happened to me driving by after sunset, so I creeped in to take a few shots while the afterglow of the sun was still lingering in the air.

The surrounding forest gave off a cold and spooky vibe as I took some last photos. Usually there are a lot of people here during the day, mostly from or on their way to the Kravica waterfalls nearby, but not so much at dusk. There is a restaurant right next to the Mogorjelo site, which was still open. So I guess you can always stop there and have a meal after exploring the sights.

  15. A great place to learn some history while enjoying beautiful scenery at the same time. Based on your pictures, I think you picked the perfect time of day to be there! Every photo is perfect ... from the beautiful afterglow to the slightly spooky last one (which would signify 'time to go home' to me) ...
